Church of Christ being built in 1958

Celebrations of Friendship

The Bridgetown Church of Christ which is situated in Hester Street in Bridgetown, was officially opened on 4th October 1959 and is the result of the collaboration of many families who had physically, as well as spiritually, completed the building of the ‘Light on the Hill’ as the building is dubbed.

On Saturday 15th March 2025, the church family celebrated the many friendships made over the intervening years with a lunch in the hall attended by over eighty people.

“We were keen to show the previous generations that we have continued their legacy of support to the community in Bridgetown,” Mary Taylor explains.

“Our congregation now supports a thriving multi-generational and multi-cultured population, several home groups, Sunday School and youth programs.

"The Bridgetown Church of Christ has been blessed with a solid foundation, and by the support shown by those who gathered together from 1958 and those who continue to worship.

“The lunch was a fabulous event, a time of reconnection as people came from far and wide to reminisce about the past and encourage our future aspirations.

“The mix of people who attended was varied, with ages from four generations, and included those who have moved away and returned for the day and those in the current congregation.

“On display were photos taken over the years at Sunday School classes, of marriages and other church gatherings, and of the building of the church, all evoking wonderful memories.”

Before the Church was built meetings were held in various houses and locations throughout the town.

The church was built by the church’s parishioners, a mix of farmers, timber workers and the trades persons in the congregation. The finished building is a church which encompasses all Christian faiths.

Mary concludes with, “The day started as an idea, ‘to have a friendship day’, to reconnect with as many of the past parishioners as we could and it culminated in a celebration of friendship.”
